I decided this year to go back to using Fujifilm mirrorless cameras instead of DSLRs. I had a Fuji X-T1 back in 2017 and loved the way it worked with all the manual dials and the smaller form factor. I did have a few issues with battery life and image quality of the XT-1 so then went back to Canon.
I sold my Canon 5D mkii and lenses last year and have got the Fuji X-T2 with the XF18-55mm lens and Fuji battery grip. This is a big upgrade from XT-1 and features 24mp newer image sensor with better EVF and back screen. It does look and feel very similar so that's a good thing. I have been out in January taking some shots and editing in Lightroom and I'm very happy with the results. Check out davidthomphotography.co.uk 'Portfolio' section for some sample images.

I was asked by one of my Shaggy Dog Walker clients to photograph their son and dog Keela as they had liked my B&W of Keela so much. Here are a few images from the shoot that were printed for framing.
If you are interested in getting family photographs taken give me a call or email. I took this today with my P20 Pro smartphone in RAW format and have created 3 versions using Luminar.
Enchanced colour, B+W and Ethereal preset, giving a different look to image. I took these with my Huawei P20 Pro on Sunday at North Berwick. They were shot in Pro mode as RAW files and edited in Luminar. The quality of smartphone cameras these days is just amazing.
As you know I have been mainly using Adobe Lightroom to create my B+W and Colour images from RAW files. Unfortunately Adobe's cloud-based subscription service is becoming unaffordable for someone who is not a full time professional photographer. I have been looking around and trying out the alternatives like Luminar, Capture One and ON1 Photo Raw. I have decided that ON1 is the best alternative to Lightroom and gives the best set of features and user interface that also has a easy learning curve. Some sample images below using ON1 Photo Raw.
After a long time considering the jump to full frame professional cameras I have eventually got myself a 5D mk ii with Canon EF 50mm lens. Not had much chance to get out around East Lothian yet but initial results are pretty good and its a lovely camera to use.
NB ARTISAN FAIRS
ABBEY CHURCH - NORTH BERWICK David Thom Photography will be at the NB Artisan Fair Saturday February 16th from 10am - 4pm Selling a selection of 16x12 and 10x8 Colour and B+W Prints I hope you can visit and help support local artists and crafters. Thought I would try some 'illustration' style prints for the upcoming NB Fair.
They are in 10x8 mounts and printing on 260gsm Lustre paper. There are various styles from watercolour to pencil sketch and have a subtle textured paper effect. These are priced at £10 and come with the same quality 1400 micron mounts as the 16x12 prints. We were in Prague for Christmas and was a great test for new smartphone camera.
It was grey and over cast unfortunately so best shots were at dusk and night using amazing Night Mode. These are all 'straight out of camera' with no retouching. Skylum have finally launched the new version of Luminar with Digital Asset Management after a long wait.
You can buy or get a free trial of this amazing software that is available at only £64. There is no subscription unlike Adobe Lightroom and updates have been free so far. Click this link to get more info https://skylum.com/luminar Here are a few samples using Luminar software. |
